Training Detlef Hanne studied Geology at the University of Freiburg and Glasgow and finished his Diplom (MSc equivalent) in Freiburg in 1994. From 1999 until 2003 he did his PhD in Geophysics at the University of Cambridge, UK.
Career and International Experience After his first degree and before starting his PhD, Detlef Hanne spent 5 years working internationally in research, projects of development cooperation and in industry. From 2003 until 2011, he was responsible as a Programme Manager for the Volkswagen Foundation for the thematic area of Earth and Environmental Sciences and funding programmes for developing and transition countries. Since 2011, he is working for KfW Development Bank, managing education programmes mainly in the southern African region.
Research and Teaching Detlef Hanne has two main research interests: 1) Higher Education and Research Financing in Low Income Countries, and 2) Capacity Development Models for Sub-Sahara Africa. He gives seminars on higher education financing and capacity development models, and about the role and function of international development cooperation. He is a member of various scientific advisory boards, advising governmental and non-governmental organizations and publishes on research policy for Low Income Countries.
